Algarve is a southernmost region of Portugal and an absolute gem that attracts visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and charming towns. As its popularity continues to grow, more travelers are discovering this coastal paradise. Alagrve offers stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and a rich tapestry of history, due to all of that it has become a must-visit destination in Europe for any wanderer. I have spent incredible month traveling through that region, noticing it’s beauty and falling in love with every second of being there, with every beach, every cliff and with every sunset. I have chosen to go there in February, which is a quiet month, out of season. I can highly recommed off season months, if you’re anything like me, trying to escape the crowds. Well, as it is becoming more and more popular destination for a vacations, more and more hotels are being built, and more and more tourist are crowding the views. The quiet month are (according to my research): Mid – January-April, October-November. What is worth mentioning is that if you want to take your pet with you, Algarve is a super dog friendly region, and you can take your furry friend almost everywhere with you. For me it was very important that I could take my dog on a hikes and on beaches, and there was no problem at all. The only thing I noticed is that dogs are not allowed on the beach during summer months. Please, take this into consideration. All right, let’s get to it. Here are my Top 10 places to see in Algarve, Portugal.

Ferragudo: A Charming Fishing Village

Ferragudo, an old fishing village, captures the essence of traditional Portuguese life. This small village was my home for a whole month and could highly recommend staying there. It is a perfect location to be commuting to other 9 incredible places in Algarve. Here you will wander through small streets, admire colorful houses and doors, have a rest on a beach, climb a cliff for a breathtaking sunsets and get the best coffee. This charming village also provides a glimpse into the region’s history and culture. Make sure to explore the local market, and a flea market event – every 2nd Sunday of the month, enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants, and take in panoramic views from the Ferragudo Castle.

Lagos: The Picturesque City

Lagos seamlessly combines historical significance with natural beauty. The town’s ancient walls, picturesque squares, and centuries-old churches offer a glimpse into Portugal’s past. Take some time to wander through a beautiful streets and search for a unique tiles. Closer to a sunset head to Ponta da Piedade to witness stunning rock formations and incredible show that sun gives you coloring water, sky and rocks. This is the view to die for!

Barriga Beach: A Tranquil Escape

This is my absolute favorite place in this incredibly beautiful region. Barriga beach and the whole suthwest coast is something out of this place, it is indescribable, a unique vibe. This is a perfect spot for some surfing or just admiring the skills of those catching waves. Praia da Barriga is even better when the weather is not too good, when the sky is clody, when it is misty and windy. You can park your car on the road leading to Aguia Beach and take a hike on the cliffs up to Barriga Beach passing few more incredible beaches on the way, admiring the views from a higher point. After the walk and time spent on the beach, come to sagres to have a relaxing time with a glass of tasty wine and local beer Sagres and soak a little bit more of surfers atmosphere.

Tres Castelos Beach in Portimão: Beauty and Adventure

Tres Castelos Beach, located in Portimão, is famous for its dramatic rock formations and clear blue waters. It’s an ideal spot for both sunbathing and adventure. Take a short hike up the cliff to have an amazing view on those colorfull rocks.

7 Hanging Valley Trail: A Hike to Remember

For those seeking an outdoor adventure, the 7 Hanging Valley Trail is a must. This hiking trail takes you along the stunning Algarve cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The trail is a perfect blend of nature, challenge, and reward. Being honest, the hike is not hard nor complicated. It is long for sure and sometimes is being very crowded. If it is possible for you, make sure to get to the hike as early as you can. I started this trail around 7:30 AM, and almost all the time it was empty. On my way back though, crowds and more crowds. And while you are on this trail you will be led to our next place you cannot miss! (I am leaving this without a photo on purpose, I am not going to spoil the views you’ll see during this route)

Benagil Cave: Nature’s Masterpiece

The Benagil Cave is an iconic natural wonder, renowned for its awe-inspiring rock formations and a large opening that allows sunlight to flood the cave’s interior. You can visit this cave by boat or kayak to experience the magic up close. I have chosen kayak and I absolutely loved it, although I have crashed the kayak on a higher wave. Despide that, the experience of kayaking out in the ocean was incredible, and also I could explore some of the neghboring beaches that are not accesible from the land and spend some time on a sandy beach all by myself for a few hours.

Algar Seco: Sculpted by Nature

Algar Seco, located in Carvoeiro, showcases the beauty of nature’s artistry. The eroded rock formations, sea arches, and grottoes create a surreal landscape that’s both mesmerizing and unique. Here you will find the most recognizable cave that has a two windows overlooking the ocean – “Dolls eyes”.

Ria Formosa Natural Park and Beach: A Haven for Wildlife

Ria Formosa is a protected natural park comprising lagoons, barrier islands, and marshlands. It’s not only a sanctuary for various bird species but also offers pristine beaches where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature. In the Formosa park you can spot some rare flamingos – white ones. At the end of the park, take a turn to the bach and you will be transported to large and pacious beach with almost white and super soft sand.

Albufeira: Lively and Energetic

Albufeira is one of the Algarve’s most well-known destinations, famed for its vibrant nightlife, bustling markets, and beautiful beaches. The Old Town exudes a traditional charm, while the modern part of the town offers a lively atmosphere for those seeking entertainment.

Praia da Marinha: A Postcard-Perfect Beach

And the last but oh definitely not the least – Praia da Marinha consistently ranks among the world’s most beautiful beaches. With its golden sands, turquoise waters, and impressive limestone cliffs, it’s a postcard-worthy spot that captures the essence of the Algarve’s natural beauty. I recommend going there or the sunset or for the sunrise in winter month to experience golden light hugging the beach and the rocks.
